Defence Research Agency is a multidisciplinary research and development organisation that provides advanced research, development, testing, and evaluation services for defence. The Agency concentrates on strategy, military science, behavioural sciences, and several different technologies.

R&D activities of the Finnish Defence Forces aim at creating the basis for the long-term development of defence capabilities and maintaining the capacity to respond to challenges stemming from the global security environment.

The Research Agency has five highly specialised research divisions: Concepts and Doctrine Division, Energetic and CBRN Technology Division, Human Performance Division, Information Technology Division, and Weapons Technology Division.

The R&D of the Finnish Defence Forces is interdisciplinary: its subjects range from military doctrines and practical warfare to the soldier’s functional capacities as well as to the development of technical capabilities, e.g. weapons and protective technologies.

20.2.2026 | Technological upheaval, threat scenarios in the military operational environment and recent war experiences have created a need to develop and coordinate the Defence Forces' innovation activities. This need has been addressed by gradually starting a coordinated Defence Forces innovation service from the beginning of 2026. 12.2.2026 | The Army will exercise local defence during 20.2.–6.3.2026. The series of exercises will be participated by altogether up to c. 3,500 soldiers, a number of other authorities, as well as business sector organisations from across Finland.

Altogether five local defence training exercises led by Finnish Army brigade-level units will be organised in the regions of Kymenlaakso, Lapland, Northern Savonia, Ostrobothnia, Satakunta and Uusimaa from 26 February to 9 March 2018. These exercises will contribute to facilitating the inter-agency cooperation capability of the security authorities as part of a rapidly developing situation framework.
