The Research Agency has five highly specialised research divisions: Concepts and Doctrine Division, Energetic and CBRN Technology Division, Human Performance Division, Information Technology Division, and Weapons Technology Division.

Defence Research Agency is a multidisciplinary research and development organisation that provides advanced research, development, testing, and evaluation services for defence. The Agency concentrates on strategy, military science, behavioural sciences, and several different technologies.

20.2.2026 | Technological upheaval, threat scenarios in the military operational environment and recent war experiences have created a need to develop and coordinate the Defence Forces' innovation activities. This need has been addressed by gradually starting a coordinated Defence Forces innovation service from the beginning of 2026. The Defence Forces innovation unit will be established under the Finnish Defence Research Agency as part of the innovation activities.
