The Finnish Defence Forces’ participation in the European Union military training mission in Mozambique will start in December
By the decision of the President of the Republic on 3. December 2021, Finland will participate in the European Union military training mission in Mozambique. Finland’s participation will start in practice at the beginning of December when the personnel selected and trained will be deployed to the area of operation.
Training mission EUTM Mozambique was established by the decision adopted by the Council of the European Union on 12 July 2021 (CFSP 2021/1143). The objective of the mission is to support the development of units of the Mozambican armed forces by means of provision of training and advice. According to President Niinistö’s decision, Finland’s participation will continue until the end of 2023. The overall strength of the Finnish personnel in the mission will be five at most.
The training mission will support the capacity building of the units of the Mozambican armed forces selected to compose a Quick Reaction Force, QRF in order for them to gain the necessary capacities to restore safety and security in the Province of Cabo Delgado.
The training mission will provide these units of the armed forces and their leadership with military training and special training including on counter-terrorism. The development of the military training capability of the Mozambican armed forces will also be supported by instructor training. In addition, education and training will be provided on compliance with human rights obligations, international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians, and on respect for the rule of law.
