The first of the Pohjanmaa-class multi-role corvettes to be built for the Navy has been launched in Rauma. In early May, the vessel was moved from the construction hall to the dock basin where the building and outfitting of the vessel continue. A festive launch ceremony was celebrated in Rauma on 21 May.

The Pohjanmaa-class vessel project is progressing towards the completion of four vessels by 2029.  The ships will be commissioned in phases between 2027- 2029.

- This project of major importance to the Navy is advancing as agreed.  These impressive vessels will constitute the core of the Navy’s striking power in both national defence and Allied collective defence tasks for the decades to come, the Commander of the Finnish Navy, Rear Admiral Tuomas Tiilikainen says.

Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) and its subsidiary RMC Defence Oy are building the Pohjanmaa-class multi-role corvettes for the Navy designed for the varying circumstances of the Baltic Sea. The vessels were ordered by the Defence Forces Logistics Command.

-The first launch of a Pohjanmaa-class multi-role corvette is a major milestone in the project and a demonstration of the seamless cooperation between the Navy, the Defence Forces Logistics Command, RMC, Saab and a number of other industrial actors, says the Deputy Chief of the Defence Forces Logistics Command, Brigadier General (Eng.) Juha-Matti Ylitalo

The corvettes can be used  for naval operations, requiring, if necessary, sustained presence at sea any time of year, including, for instance, repelling attacks from the sea, laying sea mines, conducting anti-submarine operations and protecting maritime connections.
