Security clearances

You may be subject to personnel security clearance vetting due to activity related to the Finnish Defence Forces. This site will provide you with information about consenting to security clearance vetting.

Security clearance vetting will only be conducted if you give your consent to it at the Finnish Security and Intelligence Service's (Supo) electronic transaction service (https://asiointi.supo.fi/?lang=en). The investigation will be carried out by Supo or the Defence Forces.

The Defence Forces will conduct a security clearance investigation of persons with access to the Defence Forces’ classified data or facilities. Such persons include, in certain cases, conscripts and reservists, the Defence Forces’ personnel, and employees of other companies who are involved in the Defence Forces’ procurements and projects.

Security clearance vetting for such persons is requested by a Defence Forces administrative unit or Defence Properties Finland.  For example, Defence Properties Finland may request an investigation of a person working in a construction project in a military area so that the person can be authorized to move round the construction area.

The stages of personnel security clearance

  1. An administrative unit of the Defence Forces or Defence Properties Finland will apply for security clearance vetting of you because of your appointment.
  2. You will receive an email requesting your consent to security clearance vetting, which can be given at Supo's electronic transaction service. You can give your consent within one month from reception of the first email.
  3. Give your consent at Supo’s electronic transaction service. Log in to the service at https://asiointi.supo.fi/?lang=en by clicking on “Log in” at the right top corner. Log in as a private individual. Logging in requires strong authentication. Once you are in, you will be able to see the consent form requested from you.
  4. Security clearance vetting process will take about in 3-6 months; the sooner you give your consent, the sooner the process can get started.
  5. The Defence Forces unit that requested the investigation or Defence Properties Finland will notify you when the process is completed.

Security Clearances required by virtue of international information security obligations

Based on a valid security clearance, the Foreign Ministry issues Personnel Security Clearance Certificates (PSC Certificates) and Facility Security Clearance Certificates (FSC Certificates) required by virtue of international information security obligations. More information about the Certificates can be found at the Foreign Ministry’s website at https://um.fi/national-security-authority.

The Defence Forces’ administrative units will provide instructions if a person's tasks require a PSC Certificate.

Facility security clearances

Facility security clearance vetting of companies and businesses involved in the Defence Forces’ projects or other assignments will be performed by Defence Command Finland. The Defence Command will contact the companies and businesses subject to facility security clearance vetting.
