Army shooting ranges

Parolannummi shooting ranges

The shooting ranges in Parolannummi are located in the municipality of Hattula and they are managed by the Armoured Brigade. The Parolannummi ranges include:

  • Two 150-meter shooting ranges (a total of 57 shooting positions, 100- and 50-meter shooting ranges)
  • 25 meter gun range (36 seats)
  • Ahvenisto biathlon 50-metre course (10 places).

Vuosanka shooting range

The Vuosanka shooting range is located in the municipality of Kuhmo and is used by the Kainuu Brigade. Vuosanka has a 150-meter rifle range with 30 positions.

Vekaranjärvi shooting ranges

Vekaranjärvi shooting ranges are located in the municipality of Kouvola and are managed and operated by the Karelian Brigade. Vekaranjärvi has:

  • Four 150-meter rifle ranges (two 30-meter and two 60-position ranges, all with 50-meter firing platforms)
  • A 25-meter gun range (50 seats).

Tyrri shooting ranges

Tyrri's shooting ranges are located in the municipality of Kouvola and are managed by the Utti Jaeger Regiment. In the Tyrris shooting range there are:

  • 25 meter gun range (60 firing positions)
  • 50 meter miniature rifle and free pistol range (60 seats)
  • Tyrrin hoitokunta's 50-metre course (2 seats)
  • 150 meter rifle range (40 seats, 50 meter shooting range)
  • 300 m rifle range (60 places, 150 meter shooting range)
  • 50 meter biathlon range (50 places)
  • Two situational shooting ranges
  • Moose track of the Kouvola Hunting and Shooting Club (2 places).

Taipalsaari shooting ranges

Taipalsaari's shooting ranges are located in the municipality of Taipalsaari and they are managed by the Army Academy. The area includes:

  • 150 meter rifle range (30 firing positions, 50 meter shooting range)
  • 300 meter rifle range (30 positions, 150 meter shooting range and movement target range).

Säkylä shooting ranges

The shooting ranges in Säkylä are located in the municipality of Säkylä and are managed by the Pori Brigade. There are eight shooting ranges in Säkylä:

  • Two 25-meter gun ranges (each with 40 firing positions)
  • Two 150-meter shooting ranges (20 and 60 places)
  • 300 meter rifle range (60 seats)
  • 50 meter miniature rifle range (40 seats)
  • 100 meter movement target track
  • 50 meter biathlon track (30 places).

Sodankylä shooting ranges

The shooting ranges in Sodankylä are located in the municipality of Sodankylä and are managed by the Jaeger Brigade. There are nine shooting ranges in Sodankylä:

  • Four 150-meter shooting ranges, each with 20 shooting positions
  • 300 meter rifle range (20 seats)
  • Two 25-meter gun ranges (20 seats)
  • 50 meter miniature rifle range (20 seats, with avionics)
  • 100 m movement target course (4 places)
  • Shotgun range (5 seats, Janter target equipment).

All ranges are used by the Jaeger Brigade, authorities, shooting clubs and associations.

Sandhamn shooting ranges

Sandhamn's shooting ranges are located in the city of Helsinki and are mainly managed by the Guard Jaeger Regiment.

Sandhamn's shooting ranges:

  • Two shooting ranges for weapon handling (each with space for 15 to 35 shooters)
  • 150 meter rifle range (25 shooting positions, 50 meter shooting range)
  • 300 m rifle range (40 firing positions; 50 and 150 meter shooting ranges)
  • Shotgun range (managed by Santahaminan erämiehet)
  • Moose track (managed by Santahaminan erämiehet)
  • 50 meter miniature rifle range (maintained by Helsinki garrison shooters)
  • 150 m rifle range (40 positions)
  • 25 meter gun range (40 positions)

The courses managed by the Guard Jaeger Regiment are used by the Guard Jaeger Regiment, the National Defence University, the Police, the Border Guard, shooting clubs and associations.

Raasi shooting ranges

Raasi shooting ranges are located in the municipality of Pöytyä and are managed by the Pori Brigade. Raasi has:

  • 25 meter gun range
  • 150 meter rifle range
  • 300 meters rifle range.

In addition to the Pori Brigade, the Raasi area is used by the Navy, shooting clubs and associations.

Pahkamaa

The Pahkamaa shooting range in Rovaniemi, managed by the Jaeger Brigade, has seven lanes. The area is used by the Jaeger Brigade, the Lapland Air Wing, clubs and associations.

Pahkamaa shooting ranges:

  • Two 150-meter rifle ranges
  • 25 meter gun range
  • 50 meter miniature rifle range
  • 75 – 100 meters moving target course
  • 100 meter ball track
  • Shotgun range

Padasjoki

The Armoured Brigade manages four shooting ranges in Padasjoki. The shooting range area includes:

  • 150 meter rifle range (25 firing positions)
  • 25 meter gun range (25 positions)
  • 100 meter game track (1 position)
  • SRA course (1 position)

The courses are used by the Armoured Brigade, the Pori Brigade, the Guard Jaeger Regiment, shooting clubs and associations.

Niskavaara

Niskavaara in Kemijärvi has a shooting range maintained by the Jaeger Brigade. The shooting range is a 150 meter long rifle range with 30 places. It is used by the Jaeger Brigade and the Lapland Air Command.

Niinisalo

The three shooting ranges in Niinisalo, managed by the Pori Brigade, are located in Kankaanpää. Niinisalo has:

  • Two 150-meter rifle ranges
  • 25 meter gun range

All courses are used by the Pori Brigade, shooting clubs and associations.

Lupinmäki

Lupinmäki shooting ranges are located in the municipality of Hamina. They are managed and operated by the Army Academy. Lupinmäki has:

  • Three shooting ranges (two 150 m and one 300 m range; a total of 110 shooting positions)
  • Three shotgun ranges (two for skeet shooting, one for trap shooting)
  • Two universal courts
  • Moose track
  • Wild boar track
  • Aim and bullet trajectory

Lappeenranta

The Lappeenranta shooting range is managed by the Army Academy. The area has a 50-metre miniature rifle range with biathlon equipment.

Kyrönpelto

Kyrönpelto shooting ranges are located in Mikkeli and are managed by the Karelian Brigade. Courses of Kyrönpelto:

  • 150 meter rifle range (50 firing positions)
  • 300 meter rifle range (50 positions)
  • 25 meter gun range (50 positions)
  • 50 meter biathlon range (50 positions)
  • 100 meter game track (1 position)
  • Shotgun range (18 positions)

In addition to the Karelian Brigade, the courses are used by the Army Command, shooting clubs and associations.

Kuninkaanlähde

The shooting ranges in Kuninkaanlähde are located in Kankaanpää, Hämeenkangas, and their responsible operator is the Pori Brigade. Kuninkaanlähde shooting ranges:

  • 150 meter rifle range (12 firing positions)
  • 50 meter biathlon range (miniature rifle range, 20 positions)

Both courses are used by the Pori Brigade, shooting clubs and associations.

Hätilä

The shooting ranges in Hätilä are located in the municipality of Hämeenlinna and are managed by the Armoured Brigade. Hätilä has:

  • Three 150-meter shooting ranges (20, 35 and 40 shooting positions)
  • 300-meter rifle range (40 places; 10-, 50-, 100- and 150-meter shooting ranges).

The shooting ranges in Hätilä are used by the Armoured Brigade, authorities, shooting clubs and associations.

Navy shooting ranges

Baggby

The Uusimaa Brigade has five lanes at the Baggby shooting range in Raseborg municipality. In total, about 360,000 rounds are fired on the tracks each year. The area includes the following paths:

  • 150 meter rifle range (30 firing positions, also used by authorities)
  • 300 m rifle range (26 firing positions)
  • 25 meter gun range (20/20 positions)
  • 100 meter game target range (Janter 96 shooting range)
  • Shotgun range (adjacent to the game target range)

Pansio

The Coastal Fleet manages and operates a 25-metre pistol range in Pansio, Turku.

Russarö

In Russarö in the city of Hanko there is a 150-metre rifle range with 30 places maintained by the Nyland Brigade. The course is used by the Navy, shooting clubs and associations.

Syndalen

The Syndalen shooting range in Hanko, managed by the Nyland Brigade, has 100- and 300-metre shooting ranges and movement targets. The courses are used by the Navy, the National Defence University, the Guard Jaeger Regiment, authorities, shooting clubs and associations.

Upinniemi

The Coastal Brigade maintains and operates five shooting ranges in Upinniemi in Kirkkonummi. The Upinniemi shooting range includes:

  • A 300 meter rifle range
  • Two 150-meter rifle ranges
  • 25 meter pistol range
  • Motion shooting range.

Gyltö

The Gyltö firing range in Pargas is managed by the NYland Brigade. It is used by the Navy, shooting clubs and associations. The shooting range includes:

  • 300 meter rifle range (20 shooting positions, 150 meter shooting range)
  • 25 meter pistol range (20 positions).

Air Force firing ranges

Luonetjärvi

The shooting range maintained by the Luonetjärvi Air Force Academy in Jyväskylä has a range of 150 and 300 metres, a miniature 50-metre rifle and target range, and a 25-metre pistol range.

In addition to the Jyväskylä garrison's troops, the tracks are used by the Defence Forces' other troop units, authorities, the Finnish Defence Training Association (MPK), reservist organisations and shooting clubs.

Pirkkala

Satakunta Air Wing manages five shooting ranges in Pirkkala that are also used by shooting clubs and shooting associations, as well as the Defence Forces' logistics command, the Finnish Defence Intelligence Agency. The area has the following paths:

  • 150 meter rifle range (40 firing positions)
  • 300 meter rifle range (40 positions)
  • 25 meter gun range (60 positions)
  • 50 meter miniature rifle range (60 positions)
  • 100 meter moving target course
  • SPOL operating trajectory

Rissala

Karelia Air Force Base in Rissala has a 300-metre rifle range, a 25-metre pistol range and a 150-metre range of movement targets. In addition to the Karelia Air Command, the area is used by the North Savo Regional Office.

Shooting range of the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command

Varikontie, Haapajärvi

The Finnish Defence Forces' Third Logistics Regiment maintains a 300-metre rifle range and a 25-metre pistol range in Haapajärvi. In addition to the Defence Forces, both courses are used by authorities, shooting clubs and associations.

Skinnarvik

In Skinnarvik in the municipality of Kemiönsaari, there is a firing range maintained by the Defence Forces' second logistics regiment. The area includes a 150-meter rifle range and a 25-meter pistol range, each with ten firing positions. The tracks are used by the Navy, the Defence Forces Logistics Command, shooting clubs and associations.

Tammela Regional Depot

The Second Logistics Regiment of the Finnish Defence Forces maintains a 150-metre rifle range and a 25-metre pistol range at the Tammela Regional Depot. In addition to the Defence Forces, the tracks are used by authorities, shooting clubs and associations.

Uusikylä Regional Depot

In Orimattila, Uusikylä Regional Depot has a firing range managed by the First Logistics Regiment. The area includes a 25-metre pistol range and a 50-metre miniature rifle range. In addition to the Defence Forces, the tracks are used by authorities, shooting clubs and associations.

Finnish Defence Forces Research Institute

Lakiala

The Finnish Defence Forces Research Institute has a 25-metre pistol range in Lakiala in Ylöjärvi, where approximately 2500 rounds are fired each year.
National Defence University

Tuusula

The National Defence University maintains and operates a 25-metre indoor pistol range in Tuusula.
Demonstrations of shooting ranges

Hamina

The Army Academy operates a 25-metre pistol range and a 50-metre miniature rifle range in Hamina. The pistol range has 35 firing positions and the miniature rifle range can accommodate 40 shooters. The Finnish Defence Forces are planning to transfer the shooting range to the Lupinmäki shooting range.

Heinuvaara

The Heinuvaara firing range, maintained and used by the Jaeger Brigade, has a 150-metre rifle range. The course has 30 shooting locations and about 5,000 shots are fired there every year. In addition to the Jaeger Brigade, it is used by the Lapland Air Command.

Hiukkavaara

Hiukkavaara shooting range in Oulu comprises nine lanes. The area is managed by the Kainuu Brigade, but all the tracks belonging to it are also used by associations and shooting clubs. The Hiukkavaara area has the following courses:

  • 150 meter rifle range (30 firing positions)
  • 300 meter rifle range (60 firing positions)
  • Two 25 meter gun ranges with 30 firing positions
  • 50 meter miniature rifle range (40 firing positions)
  • 100 meter target course (2 shot modes)
  • Military police and practical track (5 shooting pockets)
  • 50 meter wild boar range (3 shooting locations)
  • Shotgun range (3 firing positions)

In addition to associations and shooting clubs, the Kainuu Brigade, the Defence Forces Logistics Command and the authorities use the rifle ranges, the A-pistol range, the military police and practical tracks.

Hoikanportti

Hoikanportti's shooting range in Kajaani has ten shooting ranges. The area is managed by the Kainuu Brigade, where approximately one million shots are fired annually. Hoikanportti has the following courses:

  • Four 150-meter rifle shooting ranges (30, 40, 40 and 60 firing positions)
  • 300 meter rifle range (60 seats and screen protector)
  • 50 – 100 m and 70 – 100 m motion target courses
  • 50 meter miniature rifle range (40 seats)
  • Pistol range with 20 + 20 firing positions
  • Shotgun range

Hälvälä

The Hälvälä firing range in the municipality of Hollola is maintained by the Armoured Brigade. In addition to the Armoured Brigade, it is also used by the Guard Jaeger Regiment, the Defence Forces Logistics Department, as well as shooting clubs and shooting associations. The Defence Forces will leave the area by 2035. The area has the following paths:

  • 150, 200 and 300 meter rifle ranges (30, 20 and 40 seats)
  • 50 meter miniature rifle range (40 firing positions)
  • 25 meter gun range (50 firing positions)
  • 50 meter biathlon range (30 places)
  • Training areas (largest, i.e. over 100 square kilometres)

Rovajärvi

The Rovajärvi training area is the largest of the Finnish Defence Forces' training areas and is located in the municipalities of Rovaniemi, Kemijärvi, Sodankylä and Pelkosenniemi. It is the largest military training area in Western Europe. Rovajärvi is the Defence Forces' main firing range and covers an area of 1,070 square kilometres, of which the target area is about one third.

The Rovajärvi area is used especially for the largest nationwide military exercises, in which up to 3500 people can participate. The training area is used about 200 days per year, of which 135 are shooting days on average. On shooting days, other uses of the area are partially or completely restricted.

Vuosanka

The Vuosanka shooting and training area is located in Kuhmo and its area is approximately 138.5 square kilometres, of which the target area is approximately 34 square kilometres. The Vuosanka area is the second largest training area for the Finnish Defence Forces. It mainly hosts live fire exercises with a wide range of equipment, combat drills, and other training events.

Civilians have free access to the firing and training area during periods when no live fire is held in the area or it is not used as a troop grouping area. If the area is used as a grouping area outside shooting, the movement of civilians - such as hunters - will not be hindered in the direction of the roads.

Kyläjärvi

Kyläjärvi's shooting and training area is approximately 110 square kilometres in size and is located south and north of the Sodankylä-Kittilä motorway. The area of Kyläjärvi has been expanded by about 30 square kilometres, which means that it is now also possible to fire anti-aircraft weapons there. The Kyläjärvi area is the fourth largest training area in the Finnish Defence Forces.

Pohjankangas

The Pohjankangas firing range is located in the ridge area north of the Niinisalo garrison area, divided into Kankaanpää, Karvia and Honkajoki municipalities. The Pohjankangas firing range is slightly over a hundred square kilometres in size, and the training troops use it 220–250 days a year.

In Pohjankangas, live firing is carried out with various artillery and infantry weapons. In addition to tracked vehicles, other vehicles of the Finnish Defence Forces are used in the training area.

Hukkakero

The Hukkakero training area is used by the Defence Forces Logistics Command and the Jaeger Brigade. It covers an area of approximately 286 square kilometres, making it the third largest training area of the Finnish Defence Forces. The Hukkakero training area is located in the municipality of Kittilä.
