Field devotional on 4 June 2022 by Field bishop Pekka Särkiö

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  We listen to the Psalmist on the weekly lectionary: ”The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid? Though an army should encamp against me, yet my heart shall not be afraid; and though war should rise up against me, yet will I put my trust in him.” (Psalm 27: 1,3,4)

Thoughts relating to war used to seem somewhat distant, as long-term peace prevailed in Europe. Four months ago, the situation underwent a change. As we speak, a brutal offensive war is being waged in front of us with Ukrainians suffering and millions of people fleeing from war. Confidence in Russia has faded, and a cold truth is realised by deeds.

The serious situation shows how readiness must be sustained for defending peace. Credible defence raises the threshold for war and brings stability to the North. For the past decades, we have fairly unanimously constructed the defence capability. The Finnish liability for military service serves as its vital cornerstone. National defence is viewed to be for us all. The strong will to defend rests on this in Finland. Yet it is also advisable to follow the Biblical advise: ” If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all.” (Romans 12:18)

Human beings equal the most vital resource of this nation. Therefore, it is important to keep everyone part of this shared life. This ensures that Finland remains worth defending by us all.

Conscripts and women undertaking voluntary military service for women, you are bound to reflect on your future: where to find a place to study or work, where will I be needed? Will I have an opportunity to start a family and have kids? Be brave while facing the future. God continues to be our light and aid, God will walk us through all our life stages.  Even in the midst of a host of threats, one can remain in peace and keep calm, for all will be well eventually.

Peace and trust can prevail in our heart even in wartime conditions and while engaged in combat. Our Redeemer gave all followers inner peace by giving this promise: ”Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27).

Let us pray: ”God, we thank You for this good land. Protect our nation’s freedom and all who want to defend it and build it by their work. Please bring peace to where war is now being waged. Amen.”
