EU Military Committee Unofficial Meeting in Helsinki

The EU Military Committee (EUMC) is visiting Helsinki 9–10 September 2019 in matters relating to Finland’s EU Presidency.

In addition to the unofficial meeting held in Helsinki, the Committee will participate in the Finnish Defence Forces’ seminar on  Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence in Defence, familiarise themselves with the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats, and visit the Guard Jaeger Regiment. The Commander of the Finnish Defence Forces, General Timo Kivinen, who is the Finnish Chief of Defence, will give a briefing to the Committee about the Finnish Defence Forces.

The members of the EUMC are the Chiefs of Defence of the member states, represented in official meetings by the permanent military representatives. The Chiefs of Defence composition of the EUMC meets a few times annually.  The current chairman of the EU Military Committee is the former Italian Chief of Defence, General Claudio Graziano. Finland’s permanent military representative is Rear Admiral Juha Vauhkonen.

Also participating in the Committee meeting, are the representatives of the EU Commission, the European Defence Agency (EDA) and the European Military Staff (EUMS).

Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence and responding to hybrid threats are the priority themes during Finland’s Presidency.
