Chief of the Defence Command attended the meeting of the Northern Group's vice chiefs of defence

The Chief of the Defence Command, Lieutenant General Vesa Virtanen attended the two-day meeting of the Northern Group countries’ vice chiefs of defence in Sweden on 11–12 September 2024.

The Northern Group’s vice chiefs of defence meet annually to discuss topical security issues. This year, the discussions revolved around the military situation and cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region. Support to Ukraine was also on the agenda.

The Northern Group is a forum which deals with security and defence in Northern Europe. The Group consists of the Nordic and the Baltic countries, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The Finnish Defence Forces’ representative in the forum is the Chief of the Defence Command. The meeting was held at the 1st Marine Regiment in Berga, Sweden. It was hosted by the Swedish Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Michael Claesson.
