20.2.2026 | Technological upheaval, threat scenarios in the military operational environment and recent war experiences have created a need to develop and coordinate the Defence Forces' innovation activities. This need has been addressed by gradually starting a coordinated Defence Forces innovation service from the beginning of 2026. The Defence Forces innovation unit will be established under the Finnish Defence Research Agency as part of the innovation activities.

27.2.2026 | Finnish Navy hosts NATO:s small scale operational experimentation exercise Dynamic Messenger in Upinniemi from 2nd to 13th March.

10.3.2026 | The National Defence University and the Finnish Society of Military Sciences will organise a Seminar of Military Sciences on 4-5 November 2026. The theme of the seminar this year is The world order is undergoing change - what should be the focus of the military sciences right now? This is an opening of discussion on topical military scientific and closely related phenomena and themes from the perspectives of research, teaching and working as an officer.

24.2.2026 | The Finnish Defence Forces and XD Solutions organized Griffin Tech Days 2026 from 9 to 13 February at the Rovajärvi firing and training area and the Kemijärvi Airfield. The purpose of the event was to test and develop technologies suitable for Special Operations Forces in Finnish winter conditions.

2.3.2026 | The Commander of the Finnish Army met the Chief of the German Army, and familiarised with the operating of the Jaeger Battalion 91 in Rotenburg during his visit. The Commander also attended the Finnentag celebration marking this year the 111th anniversary since the start of Finnish Jaeger training at Hohenlockstedt.

The Finnish Army’s major project over the next decade aims for reforming the entire land defence. Implemented between 2025 and 2035, development work is to build on a realistic threat assessment, technological progress, and close cooperation with allies and the defence industry.

28.3.2026 | Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Pasi Välimäki was on a working visit to Ukraine last week. The visit focused on the areas of Kiev, Dnipro, and Zaporizhzhia. During the visit, Lieutenant General Välimäki met leadership of the Ukrainian Army, and took note of the operating of the land forces as well as command echelons of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and new capabilities. Additionally, the visit provided the opportunity to familiarise with defence industry in Ukraine.
