20.2.2026 | Technological upheaval, threat scenarios in the military operational environment and recent war experiences have created a need to develop and coordinate the Defence Forces' innovation activities. This need has been addressed by gradually starting a coordinated Defence Forces innovation service from the beginning of 2026. The Defence Forces innovation unit will be established under the Finnish Defence Research Agency as part of the innovation activities.

Defence Research Agency is a multidisciplinary research and development organisation that provides advanced research, development, testing, and evaluation services for defence. The Agency concentrates on strategy, military science, behavioural sciences, and several different technologies.

8.6.2026 | Layered Counter-UAS Initiative, known as LCI-X, is a NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT) initiative that enhances the Alliance’s capability to respond to a rapidly evolving UAS threat. A series of LCI-X-related testing events are carried out in Finland in four towns: Riihimäki, Turku, Oulu and Joensuu. The events take place on 1-10 June 2026, and their purpose is to test innovative solutions for detecting and destroying UAS and for the next generation communications and data transfer.

27.5.2026 | The fourth annual NATO Senior Leader Seminar (SLS) took place in Brussels from 14–16 April 2026, bringing together senior military and civilian leaders from across the Alliance. 30.10.2025 | The Finnish Defence Forces has released a new data and AI strategy designed to guide the organisation towards data-centric command and control and strengthened information and knowledge management. Beginning in 2025, the FDF will cooperate with NestAI to accelerate the development of AI capabilities.
