The Pohjanmaa-class vessels comprise a versatile and capable class of surface combatants. The vessels are capable of sustained operations in the Baltic Sea in all weather conditions regardless of how much ice there is. The vessels are capable of repelling surface targets and submarines, laying mines and commanding naval operations.
The Pohjanmaa-class vessels’ ability to repel and avert aerial or missile attacks is good indeed. The layered self-protection systems designed for the surface combatants include elements from stand-off ranges to the vessels. The surveillance capability will be complemented with signal intelligence capabilities. Self-defence measures start with surface-to-air missiles. Self-defence will be complemented by naval artillery, decoys and chaff.
The multi-role corvettes will bring about changes in the Navy’s operating doctrine as well. The new capabilities will enable use of fire against ground targets, enhanced generation of real-time situation picture, more extensive cooperation with the Defence Forces’ other units and more efficient capability of watching out for and engaging sub-surface targets. The construction ofPohjanmaa-class vessels began at the Rauma shipyard in 2023 and they will enter service by 2029. Pohjanmaa-class vessels will remain in service in the Defence Forces into the 2050s.
