The Hamina class includes fast attack missile craft PGG Hamina, PGG Tornio, PGG Hanko and PGG Pori The Hamina-class fast attack craft are used for protecting maritime traffic and for surface warfare. These vessels have also the capability of complementing air defence, air and surface surveillance, and electronic surveillance.
The Hamina-class craft belong to the Coastal Fleet’s 7th Surface Warfare Squadron, and Upinniemi base is their homeport. The fast attack craft’s hulls are made of aluminium and the upper decks are composite structures reinforced with carbon fibre. Considering their size, these boats are very light and agile.
In fast attack missile craft, traditional propellers are replaced with water jet propulsion. The ships can accelerate, slow down and turn in exceptional ways and they can operate in very shallow waters thanks to their low weight. The boats have also been designed to generate minimum acoustic, magnetic, heat or radar signature.
In 2018-23, the Hamina-class fast attack missile craft were given a mid-life upgrade. This mid-life upgrade performed by Patria comprised overhaul measures which will ensure the vessels’ extended service time. The vessels were also fitted with torpedo armament, new anti-ship missiles, main gun, new sensors, and a new combat management system delivered by Saab.
