Finland joined the European Medical Coordination Centre

The Multinational Medical Coordination Centre – Europe (MMCC-E) is a network that supports medical cooperation capabilities, including cross-border patient evacuations. The Surgeon General of the Finnish Defence Forces, Brigadier General Medical Tuomo Leino, signed the accession agreement for full membership in MMCC-E in Helsinki on 17 August 2026.

MMCC-E operates under the German Armed Forces and is headquartered in Koblenz. Its objective is to meet the operational requirements arising from the changing security environment in Europe. The network supports the planning of both civilian and military medical services. Its key cooperation partners are NATO and the EU.

“Finland’s accession to MMCC-E strengthens Finland’s comprehensive security. Medical preparedness and readiness are key issues. Cooperation improves the coordination of medical resources as well as the arrangements for patient evacuations and medical care in crisis situations. At the same time, Finland gains access to the expertise, experience and operating models of other European countries. In turn, Finland contributes its strong experience in cooperation between civilian healthcare and military medicine. Pre-agreed and rehearsed procedures are particularly important in exceptional circumstances. MMCC-E strengthens the medical resilience of the whole of Europe,” says Brigadier General Medical Tuomo Leino.
